Prevention & Intervention
Learn more

All Prevention staff are Master level therapists, intervention specialists and coordinators. In addition, coordinators that implement The Corner Theater Troupe must possess a theater background. Staff are trained in current evidenced-based prevention programs such as Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), Motivational Interviewing, Teen Intervene and The Corner Theater Troupe/Peer Education Program.

The Prevention team integrates strategies such as early intervention with individuals that have experimented with substances or at risk for substance abuse. The team identifies and works with the protective factors in various domains such as: a) at the individual level; b) in the family including living with parents able to meet their children’s affective needs; c) at school which includes school adherence; d) among peers such as close peers with a low tolerance of drug use; e) in the community linking services in order to provide a strong social network. Further work is completed in broad contextual factors such as inequity, poverty, neighborhood disorganization, lack of health and social services, availability of substances (working with local coalitions). Staff develop presentations that are representative of all protective factors in order to educate both teens and adults.

The Prevention team provides services in public and alternative schools, home, various community agencies, parks, office locations and churches. In addition, the team participates in the Health Fair and Red Ribbon Week campaign and AIDS walk.

Prevention services involve using Evidence Based Programs, information dissemination, education, community awareness and other strategies to preclude, forestall, or impede the development of substance use or mental health problems. Prevention services are universally open to the community as a whole. However, if particular risk factors for substance abuse or mental illness are identified, more targeted Prevention services are available. Universal programs are continually open to individuals, or community groups. Targeted Prevention activities are ended when the particular risk factors are addressed or removed, or a more intensive level of care is warranted. We recognize that people vary in the way they formulate and experience their lives, we maintain the value of, and need for, a variety of approaches to prevention, which we do our best to provide in various approaches, to meet the needs of the individual or community. Prevention programs are available to all in the local community and programs focus on adults, adolescents and other high risk populations. As a State of Florida Department of Children and Families licensed provider of Prevention Level 1 and 2 Services, Intervention Services and HIV/AIDS Testing and Counseling Services, Concept Health Systems is required to adhere to the requirements of the Florida Administrative Code 65D-30.012 and 65D-30.013.

We provide treatment to individuals of all ages and ethnic groups who are suffering from substance abuse. Our outpatient rehabilitation provides individual and group therapy using Evidence Practice Treatment. In a traditional counseling environment, addiction specialists help patients resolve interpersonal conflicts, stress, anxiety, and other emotional concerns that relate to chemical dependency, and for patients to discuss issues and receive support as they face their daily work, school and stress factors in life.

Group therapy sessions can focus on strategies to maintain sobriety, prevent relapse, and develop a supportive environment for recovery. Our outpatient treatment facilities also provide education, and support for families who help theur loved one through the recovery process.

Finally, the unique integration of services allows patients to get rid of their toxic substance system in the most convenient way available, and return to normal drug-free life. As patients progress with treatment, they may start making less frequent visits to the clinic themselves with the support of their therapist and clinic staff. Treatment continues until the individual has mastered the basic skills for self-care and continuous recovery.

Once Prevention staff complete the pre and post survey and results indicate intervention is needed, the individual will receive 3 to 4 brief sessions with a trained prevention interventionist. In addition, staff complete a pre and post test in order to measure consumer needs and if necessary, refer the individual to a higher level of care either within the agency or an outside community agency depending on the individual’s needs.

Staff are trained and certified in Motivational Interviewing which is an evidenced-based counseling approach that is used to help individuals adhere to treatment recommendations. It emphasizes using a directive, patient-centered style of interaction to promote behavioral change. Staff are also trained in Teen-Intervene; which is an evidence-based program for 12 through 19 year olds. The Theatre Troupe staff have a solid knowledge of health concepts regarding substance abuse and prevention techniques which includes lesson plans outlined in its curriculum.
